Glass & Fragile Packing Spec

Double-boxing, six-sided cushioning, edge protectors and the shake test.

For glass, ceramics and breakables the goal is that the item never touches the box wall or another item. Double-boxing is the standard.

Standard steps

  1. Wrap each itemAt least two bubble layers per piece, secured.
  2. Inner boxPlace in an inner box/container and fill all gaps; nothing moves inside.
  3. Pad the outer box~5cm of cushioning across the bottom.
  4. Centre itPut the inner box dead centre with ~5cm on every side; fill with foam/padding.
  5. Top cushionLeave ~5cm on top before sealing.
  6. ReinforceUse the cross method for heavy items; add edge protectors.
  7. Fragile marksApply fragile/this-way-up labels, then weigh and label.

Box & fill

  • Use a sturdy outer box, larger rather than smaller, with six-sided cushioning;
  • Prefer bubble, moulded foam and EPE;
  • Separate multiple fragile items so they never touch.

Don’ts

  • Glass directly against the box wall;
  • Empty cavities or rattling when shaken;
  • A soft box or single-layer wrap for long transit.
Never skip the shake test

After sealing, shake near your ear. Any clink or movement means repack — far cheaper than a claim.

Price & estimate note

Equipment prices are indicative Australian retail bands in AUD for 2026. They vary by brand, retailer, promotion and over time, and exclude GST, freight and installation; the invoice at purchase prevails. “Seconds saved” are ranges from published warehouse-operations material — estimates, not guarantees. Time your own process with a stopwatch first. See Sources & method.
