Bench Hand Tools

Markers, utility and safety knives, scissors, tape measures, cut-resistant gloves and more: use, buying tips, AUD prices, placement and safety.

Small tools are cheap, but you search for them every day. Without a fixed home for the marker, knife and scissors, the time lost hunting adds up. Fixed placement and safety are the quickest wins in station 5S.

Give every tool a home

  • Use a shadow board: one fixed spot per tool, with a peg or drawn outline; return after use so a missing tool is obvious at a glance;
  • Keep the high-frequency pen, knife and scissors in the waist-to-eye golden zone — a magnetic strip on the bench edge or a belt holster works;
  • Stock consumables (markers, blades, stickers) in a box at the station so you never stop to hunt.

Safety red lines

  • The utility knife is the most common cause of station cuts: prefer a self-retracting / concealed-blade safety knife, never point the blade at anyone;
  • Hand a knife with the point toward yourself; never leave scissors on a box edge or let them travel with a carton;
  • A dull blade is more dangerous than a sharp one — you push harder and it slips, so change blades promptly;
  • Wear cut-resistant gloves for bulk corrugated work or heavy lifting.
Practical tip

Fix the pen and knife to the bench edge with a magnetic strip and lanyard, and keep scissors in a fixed cup. After a week of the shadow board, a missing tool or one not returned is obvious.

Price & estimate note

Equipment prices are indicative Australian retail bands in AUD for 2026. They vary by brand, retailer, promotion and over time, and exclude GST, freight and installation; the invoice at purchase prevails. “Seconds saved” are ranges from published warehouse-operations material — estimates, not guarantees.
